Melanin and Makeup | Winter Routine

If you’re sad, add lipstick and attack.

With the colder weather all settled in, I have to make a change in my makeup routine. In summer my main concern is preventing my face from getting oil slick, in the winter I’m oh so thankful for the oil factor. That being said there are definitely some product changes. i tend to have a fairly simple routine in winter, who am I kidding  my routine is simple all year round. There are two things that come to mind when I think of what I can adjust in my makeup routine, primer and powder.

Primer

I like to use the Nars primer in the winter, it has a lotion like texture instead of silicone, I find that it holds my makeup better and prevents my blush and foundation from breaking down and disintegrating through the day. I prefer to use it in the winter as I see an actual difference in the wear of my makeup as opposed to when I wear it in the warmer months. This has also helped to prolong the life of my primer- I’ve had it for a few years. This I use on my cheeks and around my mouth, where my concealer tends to crease and separate.

I use a different primer for my under-eye area. The J.One Jelly is new to my repertoire this year but I love it, in fact I loved it so much that I’ve already bought a back up of it. This was partly due to the price being drastically lower than what it’s sold for regularly. I prefer to use this under my eyes as I feel it helps to prevent my concealer from settling in my fine lines and also from separating. This is a dual purpose item in that in can also be used as a light weight moisturizer, which I think is part of the reason it works so well under my eyes. After I’ve concealed and powder my under eye area can look a little dry.

Sometimes I might use a silicone base primer on top of the Nars one just to help with longevity, especially if I know it's going to be a long day and I want to make sure that my makeup is maintained. For this I would use my Lioele Balm primer, it works with the Nars primer and doesn't cause it to pill up or separate, which can happen sometimes when you mix primers.

Powder

In general I tend to go fairly light handed with the powder, though I have tried baking. It looked good one or two times but overall I felt that it was too much for my under eye area.Though my skin is oily I try not to powder as much in the winter. There are some days where it’s it -15 Degrees Celsius outside, I don’t think that having a bit of extra oil on my skin is going to be a bad thing.

I usually go between my loose rice powder from Palladio and my pressed Stila powder, it just depends on how lazy I’m feeling that day.  I might also reach for my Korres face powder, they have a slight illuminating effect to them and aren't too heavy when worn in fact they offer very light coverage, which works great in the winter and not so much in the summer.

So these are some changes I make to improve the wear of my makeup during the winter. How do you change up your makeup routine in winter?
