If I could wear perfume I think I would be one of those women who are constantly changing their scent and have 20 different fragrances to choose from. Scent plays a pivotal role in our life, it impacts our memories our moods and even our taste. Whenever I smell the perfume Opium by YSL, I think of my grade 2 teacher, it’s just a pleasant and happy memory for me even though I can’t remember her face or her name, but that perfume forever ties her to me.

I have one perfume that I apply very sparingly, if I apply it to heavy then I get a headache, which is never pleasant. For along time I wasn’t able to wear it all, any fragrance I applied would make me feel nauseous and ill and would eventually lead to the afore mentioned  headache. It’s been a few years since my fragrance allergy presented itself, so now I can lightly apply some fragrances.

Selection

I really want to purchase some indie perfumes, I think the fragrance profile is endless with indie brands, some companies have a rich catalogue  of scents that you can purchase, one good think is that they offer them in different sizes so you can try a sample of the fragrance and see if it agrees with your body chemistry. You already know that I love having options and this is one area where there is a plethora of choices available.

The only thing is with indie fragrances it can be difficult to determine how the ingredients will work with your body chemistry, the fragrance description may indicate that it should smell like cotton candy on the boulevard but on your skin it turns to baby powder. That’s disappointing. But as I mentioned you can get a sample and test it out before committing to a bigger more expensive size.

There are quite a few popular fragrances that I would be interested in, well I think I would anyway. Since the different scents aren’t clear to me, they all tend to smell similar which is to say it’s undefined.

Scent profile

When I think about how I would want to smell three things come to mind, vanilla, light floral and petricor.  Vanilla, true deep rich vanilla is a fragrance that I want to douse myself in, I want to wallow in it, put it in my hair, all over my clothes, I want to be saturated in it. I just love that fragrance so much. For some reason it makes me think of men sitting in a study filled with walnut bookshelves, smoking cigars and sipping whiskey as they sit before the fireplace in their great oversized chairs. Not sure why, but that’s what comes to my mind. I can’t explain.

With light floral I’m thinking the scent of peonies and roses with a little bit of citrus mixed in, I get the visual image of a young woman with sheer chiffon layers, high heels strolling through the garden as the wind dances through the layers of her dress. With florals I prefer them more subtle and not as in your face, something soft and delicate.

Petricor, this to me is the smell of rain. It’s the bringer of thunder storms and lightening. Fresh earth, green grass and hot cement. The smell of summer. This smell tantalizes me in such a way that whenever I smell it, I want to bite it, I just want to sink my teeth into it and hold on.

Appearance

I think part of the allure of perfume is the packaging. The little jars on your vanity, arrayed beautifully looking like well displayed jewels. I love the Victor and Rolf Flowerbomb bottle, it looks so chic and feminine, with the soft pink structured glass it's just beautiful. Knowing myself if perfumes weren’t so expensive I would probably buy them just of the bottles, sad I know, but I so would.

Even though I’m not able to wear perfume I like when companies make nice portable or mini versions which are nice for travel. You can easily tuck your fragrance of the moment into your handbag and reapply when you want to freshen up.

Do you wear perfume? If so what are you're favourite scents?
